HAND VEINS
We develop varicose veins in the legs because of an increase in the on the venous system from the stagnant blood that is supposed to go back to the heart.
Arms and hands never have this problem because they are at the same level as your heart. Some women, however, complain about the veins on the back of their hands. These are very prominent species at certain times of the day, or, especially, with the arrival of warm weather. The problem typically arises in women who are thin. Over the years, the aging of the skin causes atrophy of the subcutaneous tissues which makes veins even more prominent. This is most noticeable on the backs of the hands where the skin is already thin. Often these are patients with varicose veins in the legs, indicating that, however, there is a certain familiarity for laxity of the venous tissues throughout the body. Some women are distressed by the presence of these very prominent veins and wish to eliminate them. These veins, while very visible and dilated, are not varicose veins. In fact, the blood runs in the right direction. Therefore, the treatment of the veins of the dorsum of the hand is only required for aesthetic reasons (i.e. esthetic rejuvenation)
TREATMENT
The treatment consists in injecting the more prominent hand veins using the same technique used for varicose veins of the legs (Sclerotherapy). All procedures are performed in the office by a Board-Certified M.D. No anesthesia is necessary and no incisions are made, so you will not see scars. At least one vein draining to the arm is left untreated for possible future i.v. therapy. At the end a little compression bandage is applied to the hands, which will be maintained for a week and will allow you to perform the normal hand movements, such as driving a car. The hands may swell during the first next few days after the procedure, but the swelling disappears spontaneously. Usually 2-3 sessions are necessary to eliminate all unsightly veins.
